Carlo J. S. Cattarello Jr., P. ENG., B.Sc. (Metallurgy)
April 20, 1938-March 29, 2023
In loving memory of our dearest husband and father who passed away at Temiskaming Hospital of natural causes.
‘The Cat’ was born and raised in The Porcupine. He attended Golden Avenue Public School and South Porcupine High School, where he was an all-round athlete participating in hockey, basketball, football and track and field. In 1952, he won the Northern Ontario Junior Tennis Championship, later defeating John Bassett, Jr. in Toronto at the All Ontario competition. Carlo attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan on a hockey scholarship, graduating in 1961 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering. At Michigan Tech, he met many life-long friends.
Upon completing his degree, Carlo returned to The Porcupine with employment at McIntyre Mines eventually becoming Mill Superintendent and also playing hockey for the T&S Flyers and the Abitibi Eskimos in The Porcupine Mines League. Carlo continued his Milling career in multiple locations including Warner Lake, Pickle Lake, Langmuir Mines, Ontario; Brenda Mines in Peachland and Wesfrob Mine, Tasu, BC (where he met Diana). In 1983, he began teaching at the Haileybury School of Mines (HSM). After his years in industry, in his teaching position, he was able to convey his passion for extractive metallurgy, inspiring new generations. Carlo also contributed to starting the co-op program, finding students placements for hands on experience and employment while attending school. In 1984, he introduced varsity hockey to the school with the HSM Miners, playing in the OCAA tier II league. A former team member expressed, “Carlo had a unique ability to inspire and lead his team to victory. He was a skilled strategist, a master at motivating his players to give their all on the ice.” The Miners were successful throughout their tenure, culminating in capturing the OCAA Tier II title in 1988. Carlo also arranged games for the team in such places as Holland, Kentucky, Lake Placid and Moosonee. When Carlo retired in 2003, he and his wife Diana started Cattarello Metallurgical Consultants, INC and then in 2010-2018, Cattarello Assayers, INC in Timmins. Carlo (with Diana, the wind beneath his wings) had a significant influence in the lives of many, in his roles as friend, supervisor, teacher, mentor and, especially, coach. His personality fit perfectly with his work with the mining school students. Carlo and Diana’s home was always open to them for nurturing and mentoring into young adulthood.
Carlo is perhaps best known for his kind heart, generous spirit, jovial manner, coy smile and being a promoter’s promoter. The citizens of the Tri-Town will likely never forget Carlo frequently showing up at their doors selling sausage to support the hockey team. He was known to tell people he “only had one bag left” and then when someone would agree to buy, he would say “would you like hot or mild.” Carlo was an avid fisherman, enjoying the many lakes and streams the area provided, especially Portage Bay. He also spent his free time partridge hunting, visiting in the community and chatting with his many friends on the phone. In the words of one of his students, “Carlo’s impact on the lives of those who knew him cannot be overstated. He was a true leader, a beacon of light in a world that can sometimes be dark and challenging. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched.”
Carlo is predeceased by his first wife Marilyn (Heikkinen) and his parents Carlo Sr. and Mary Cattarello. He is survived by his wife Diana, of Haileybury, his two daughters, Dr. Anne-Marie and Lori Cattarello, of Clearwater, Florida and his sister, Sandra, of South Porcupine.
The family wishes to convey heartfelt gratitude to the Temiskaming Hospital, the Palliative Care Room, Dr. Corneil, Dr Corbeil, the nursing staff; student nurses and doctors, the support staff, North East Home and Community Support Services, longtime P.S.W Elizabeth, Leo Geoffroy of Buffam Leveille Funeral Home and to the Lions Club.
Carlos' final care has been entrusted Buffam Leveille Funeral Home (Haileybury). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Temiskaming Shores Minor Hockey Association (tsmha.ca) or Haileybury Foodbank (705-672-2119). A Grand Celebration of life will be held for Carlo on June 24, 2023 at the Haileybury Waterfront Pavilion, at 2:00pm. All are welcome. Condolences and memories may be left at www.buffamleveille.com
