Obituary for George Ethier
George Ethier, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 22, 2022. He was a loving husband to Liliane Dupuis of Haileybury, Ontario, for over 53 years.
Born in Earlton, Ontario, he was the son of Rudolphe Ethier and Rolande Daviau, and brother to Robert Ethier (Annette), Jean-Guy Ethier (Nicole), Gilbert Ethier (Suzanne), Marc Ethier (Melody), Paulette Ethier (Joe). He was an incredible son and sibling who left his hometown at an early age to begin working and providing for himself and for his family. His siblings were very close to his heart and he loved them all so deeply including his uncles and aunts, and more importantly his 37 nieces and nephews not including their spouses.
George worked on the pipeline, did construction for Gilbert’s Welding, was involved in the Ontario Labour Union, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus 1398 Haileybury, a citizen of the Metis Nation of Canada, representative for the Metis Nation of Ontario for over 20 years assisting his wife on regional consultation efforts. He also worked for Mino M’shkiki Health Centres as one of the Elders on the Temiskaming Wisdom Keepers Council. George was recently known to others as Maintenance Supervisor for Yukon Inc in North Cobalt, Ontario. He also ran his own Thruway Muffler and Joe Loue Tout Shop both in New Liskeard and Haileybury for approximately 10 years. More notably, George had a vision to create a cultural ground in North Cobalt, Ontario, and was just about to put the final touches and plans together when he was diagnosed with lung cancer and couldn’t complete this vision he had for the Indigenous community of Temiskaming. George, through his own cultural journey, discovered the love, honour and respect he was receiving from the Indigenous community and really wanted to show his gratitude by contributing his skills and efforts to building a cultural ground for the Indigenous families of Temiskaming to enjoy for generations to come. The first Powwow on the ground was held on June 21, 2022, and George was given special honour for his contributions and efforts.
George retired and moved off-grid in South Lorrain Township where he spent much of his time enjoying the outdoor life surrounded by his grandchildren. He was dedicated to his work, hard working and built like an ox. He was also notably revered as “Papa Bear” for his calm yet subtle nature and his big bear like hugs.
He was survived by his wife Liliane, his children, Mario Ethier (Tracy Heikkila), Joey Ethier (Rosanne Godmaire), Tina Nichol (Chris Nichol), and his 7 grandchildren, Niki-ann Brideau-Ethier, Nolan Nichol, Mikka Fortin-Ethier, Mary-Jaye Ethier, Seth Ethier, Lexi Ethier, and Ekela Nichol. He was predeceased by his brother Gilbert Ethier and sister Paulette Ethier.
George and family would like to send our love and gratitude to Dr. Marie-Lynne Lacasse, Dr. Hillary Lawson and her incredible “angel” team of nurses who came to him at his time of need. It is important to express that these doctors play such a vital role in the wellbeing of our community, and they should be honoured for that. And a special thank you to Rosanne for her contribution to his care throughout his stay in his home and Jill for the support and strength she brought us.
He also held a special place in his heart for Colleen and the family would like to thank her as well for all the time spent caring for him and his wife. We welcome you to our family always.

C’était un fils et un frère incroyable qui a quitté sa ville natale à un âge précoce pour commencer à travailler et à subvenir à ses besoins et plus tard à ceux de sa famille. Ses frères et sœurs lui tenaient beaucoup à cœur et il les aimait tous profondément, y compris ses oncles et ses tantes, et plus important encore, ses 37 nièces et neveux, sans compter leurs conjoints ou conjointes.
George fut membre à vie du Conseil des Chevaliers de Colomb du conseil 1398 à Haileybury.
George a travaillé sur le pipeline, a fait la construction pour Gilbert’s Welding, a participé au Syndicat de l’Ontario. Il a également dirigé son propre Thruway Muffler et Joe Loue Tout Shop à New Liskeard et à Haileybury pendant environ 10 ans. Il fut récemment reconnu comme superviseur de l’entretien pour Yukon Inc à North Cobalt, en Ontario, jusqu’à sa retraite en 2015. George fut citoyen de la Nation métisse du Canada et représentant de la Nation métisse de l’Ontario pendant plus de 20 ans, aidant sa femme Liliane qui est consultante régionale. Il a également travaillé pour les centres de santé Mino M’shkiki en tant qu’ancien du Conseil des gardiens de la sagesse de Temiskaming. Plus particulièrement, George avait la vision de créer un terrain culturel à North Cobalt, en Ontario, et était sur le point de mettre en place les touches finales et les plans lorsqu’il a reçu un diagnostic de cancer du poumon et n’a pas pu compléter cette vision qu’il avait pour la communauté autochtone de Temiskaming. Au cours de son propre parcours culturel, il a découvert l’amour, l’honneur et le respect qu’il recevait de la communauté autochtone et voulait vraiment démontrer sa gratitude en mettant ses compétences et ses efforts au service de la construction d’un terrain culturel dont les familles autochtones de Temiskaming pourront profiter pour les générations à venir. Le premier pow-wow sur le terrain a eu lieu le 21 juin 2022, le jour de son 53e anniversaire de mariage avec Liliane et George a reçu un honneur spécial pour ses contributions et ses efforts.
George a pris sa retraite et a déménagé hors réseau dans le canton de South Lorrain où il a passé une grande partie de son temps à profiter de la vie en plein air entouré de ses enfants et ses petits-enfants. Il était dévoué à son travail. Il était particulièrement vénéré comme « Papa Bear » pour sa nature calme mais subtile et ses gros câlins d’ours. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Liliane, ses enfants, Mario (Tracy Heikkila), Joey (Rosanne Godmaire), Tina (Chris Nichol), et ses 7 petits-enfants, Niki-ann Brideau-Ethier, Nolan Nichol, Mikka Fortin-Ethier, Mary-Jaye Ethier, Seth Ethier, Lexi Ethier et Ekela Nichol. George et sa famille envoient leur amour et leur gratitude à la Dre Marie-Lynne Lacasse, à la Dre Hillary Lawson et à son incroyable équipe d’infirmières « anges » qui sont venues à lui au moment où il en avait besoin. Il est important d’exprimer que ces médecins jouent un rôle essentiel pour le bien-être de notre communauté, et ils et elles devraient être honorés pour cela. Et un merci spécial à Rosanne pour sa contribution par ses soins apportés à George tout au long de son séjour chez lui et à Jill pour le soutien et la force qu’elle nous a apportés. Il tenait une place spéciale dans son cœur pour Colleen et la famille aimerait la remercier pour tout le temps passé à prendre soin de lui et Liliane.
