Obituary for Joyce Lyla Sobol (McMahon)

In loving memory of Joyce Lyla Sobol (nee McMahon) who passed away peacefully, in her 93rd year, on November 25th, 2023 at Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

Joyce was the beloved wife of the late Ken Sobol (predeceased 2016) for 69 years. She was the mother of 3 daughters, Beverly (predeceased and the late Del Schick), Susan (predeceased) and Jenny (Terry Semple). Joyce leaves behind her loving siblings, Darlene (John McLennan), Debbie Cormier, Allen McMahon (Linda), Steve McMahon, Dwight McMahon (Debbie), and brothers-in-law Fred Haviland and Richard Kelly. Also left to mourn are her 5 grandchildren, Trina, Amanda, Aaron, Christopher & Amy (Mike McKay), as well as many great-grandchildren. Joyce was predeceased by her siblings, Norman McMahon, Aldine Haviland, Marilyn Kelly, Morley McMahon and Leona Marion.

Joyce was a staple in the Elk Lake community her entire life, whether it was as the custodian at Elk Lake Public School for 25 plus years, cutting and selling blocks of ice, selling dew worms & minnows, or running the bottle depot in Elk Lake. She was heavily involved in the Elk Lake Curling Club (granted a lifetime membership), served on the Elk Lake Museum Board and Elk Lake Cemetery Board. Joyce took great pleasure in picking blueberries, hunting and fishing. She could prepare all the things caught and picked, better than most! She enjoyed bingo, winters in Florida, scratch tickets and hosting large family gatherings during the holidays (using a very tiny kitchen). Although she was a woman of few words, her love was passed along to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She never missed sending a card for any family birthday, anniversary or special occasion.

A special “Thank You” to the staff at Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake, where Joyce was treated with great respect and care in her final year. Joyce was also lovingly cared for in her home by caregivers, Keisha, Ayden, Shirley and Gaetaine.

Joyce's final care has been entrusted to the Buffam Leveille Funeral Home - New Liskeard chapel. Cremation has taken place, as per Joyce’s wishes. A gathering of family and friends will take place in the spring in Elk Lake. In Joyce’s memory, we hope you would consider becoming more involved in the community you love, just as she did.
