Obituary for June Carolyn Porter

Porter, June Carolyn - It is with a heavy heart that the family of June Carolyn Porter (née MacRae) announces her passing on the 19th of February, 2021.

June was a true daughter of the north. Born and raised in North Cobalt, her wild, free spirit led her to Toronto in the 1970s where she met her soulmate and love of her life, Donavon Porter. June and Donavon were married in Haileybury in 1974. After their marriage, they embarked on an epic journey across America in a beat up Dodge Dart before returning to the north to build a log house in the woods outside of Haileybury and start a family.

June was a dedicated and creative mother who inspired in her children her own deep love of nature and respect for the land. She used the woods and fields as her classroom and taught her children the names of the plants and animals, the patterns of the seasons, and the stories of first peoples who called this place home. She was a devoted mother who wanted the world for her children, believed in their endless potential, and drove them to believe in themselves and to fight for and achieve their goals.

June was an artist who used textiles and glass to create works of striking beauty with exacting detail. Always a perfectionist and humble to the core, she struggled to acknowledge the scope of her talent and impressive skill. Any visitors to the Porter family home can attest to her artistic prowess.

June was a free spirit who lived life on her own terms and refused to be swayed by either convention or tradition. She inspired her family with her passionate belief in living fearlessly and being true to oneself. Like the wild places that she loved so much, she was at her core a force of nature.

June is predeceased by her mother, Edith MacRae (née Högberg); her father, Gordon MacRae; and her brother, William Rice. She is survived by her husband, Donavon Porter; her daughter, Lydia Porter (husband: David Schatzker) and her granddaughter, Mariner Porter; her son, Harrison Porter; and her brothers, Ronald Rice (wife: Kathleen), Donald MacRae, and Bryan MacRae.

In keeping with June’s wishes, cremation has taken place at Lakeview Crematorium, Haileybury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Condolences and contributions may be left at www.buffamleveille.com.
