Obituary for Mary Marguerite Carter (Kirkey)

On the morning of January 19th, 2023, Mary Marguerite Carter (Kirkey), at the age of 98, quietly passed away in the New Liskeard Temiskaming Hospital after a brief stay following a heart attack at her apartment on Market Street.

Mary, who was known as Marie, enjoyed a long and happy life surrounded by her family of brothers and sisters, her husband Fred, her son Wayne and daughter Janice, six grandsons, Robin, Tim, Andrew, Kelly, Jamie, Martin and one granddaughter, Maggie. The twelve great-grandchildren all got to know and spend time with their great-grandmother.

Marie was born in Belle Vallee on November 13th, 1924 to Michael Joseph Kirkey and Mary Elizabeth Sheedy. She was the eldest of seven children, who all grew up together on the Kirkey family farm in Belle Vallee. During the second world war, as a young teenager, she moved to New Liskeard and worked for Hill Clark Francis where she met her husband to be, Fred Carter, and they were married in 1945. On January 28th, 1947 their son Wayne was born and on January 19th, 1955 their daughter Janice was born. Fred and Marie moved to the farm in Harris township where she raised her family. Here, the kettle was always on the stove, ready for tea to be made when family and visitors dropped in and Marie always had some cookies or cake to go along with it.

She was an avid gardener and could preserve and make jams and jelly and pickles out of anything that grew on the farm. She always had a way of making a great meal when people dropped in on short notice. Her flower garden was her pride and joy and she experimented with many, many flowers and plants over the years. Even at her apartment she had a few plants to putter with. She passed on much of her gardening knowledge of what to grow and how to grow it to her children and grandchildren. On the farm, which was purchased by her Grandson to carry on the farm tradition, she would sit at a table under an umbrella beside the garden in the shade and prepare the seeds and advise the planting process, and upon harvest, shared the bounty. Right up to this past year she supervised and advised the planting and flowers in Janice’s Garden and flower beds. Besides gardening, she enjoyed music, knitting, dancing, reading, crossword puzzles, bowling, playing cards and board games and keeping up to date on the news and current affairs.

When Fred passed away in April, 2009, Marie left the farm and moved to the Senior's apartments on Market Street in New Liskeard where she happily lived independently until she passed away.

She was predeceased by her parents, as well as siblings Eugene ('Gene'), Loretta (Smith), Cecile (Waugh), Jim, and Theresa (Willard).

Marie is fondly remembered and survived by brother Vincent, and children Wayne (Evelyn), and Janice (Robert MacPherson). Her Grandchildren, Robin (Melanie), Tim (Heather), Kelly (Lindsay), Jamie (Linda), Andrew (Lidija), Martin, and Maggie, and 12 great grandchildren Riley, Kendra, Logan, Kelsey, Emma, Dominic, Alexis, Mia, Toby, Cole, Tadas, and Kipras.

Marie’s final care is being arranged by Buffam Leveille Funeral Home, New Liskeard Location, 705-647-4450, where she will be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held this summer when all the families can be together.
